Ion implantation - Hardion technology
IONICS is nowadays promoting the technology of ION IMPLANTATION as a new mature, ready to industrialize, technology for surface improvement. This integration of the Hardion+ technology is the real goal of this collaboration.It is a real new innovation in dry surface treatment coming out of R&D and entering rapidly in the industrial world with the advantage of a small dedicated team to surface treatment combined with the industrial power of the first glass producer of the world.
The ION IMPLANTATION : HARDION+ gives us the ability to “dope” the surface of products by beaming this surface under vacuum in order to modify the properties of this surface without adding a coating on the top of it. The result comes essentially from the modification of the existing surface of the treated parts. No additional layer but a real modification of the atomic organisation adding elements in this network and/or modifying the organisation of the surface.
We have as mature solutions identified several technical fields of improvement :
- Drastic increasing of hardness for metal surfaces : Hardening for replacing chromium , some “dry tribology” effect, hardening deeply tools.
- Diminishing reflection of glass or sapphire and improving scratch resistance.
- Improving the resistance to corrosion, and reducing the porosity of electrolytic deposition : Gold, Silver, …
- Intensively cross linking the surface of elastomeric surfaces , giving a skin effect, reducing the coefficient of friction, and improving the resistance of plastics on surface.
So much more in the pipe line of our R&D teams combining their efforts and specificity to make it become a real everyday solution for the industry. Of course the goal of such a general publication, is to give some summarized information in order to alert the technical curiosity of interested people, building afterwards a deeper communication on specific applications.
