Reel to reel ion beam implantation process on electroplated connectors

Ion implantation process applied to electroplated noble metals increases different properties such as hardness value, wear and corrosion resistance leading to important metal saving. Optimization tests are currently carried out on the ionR2RTM industrial line on gold electroplated connectors. Surface hardness of the implanted gold layer reached 3 GPa (equivalent to 310 Hv) which is comparable to stainless steel. Wear resistance was significantly improved while conductivity remained unaffected. A critical advantage of ion implantation process is the absence of any deposited coating which usually degrades over time.
